However, more than 20k devices were implanted in people throughout the country by then. According to NorthJersey.com, "The defect was linked to the use of dissimilar metals in neck and stem components that are anchored into the femur. Corrosion of the metals released toxic substances into the blood stream and caused muscle, tissue, and bone deterioration," lawyers said. The poisoning of the blood from chromium or cobalt is also referred to as Metallosis.

There are over 3,000 people who now must decide whether or not to accept a share of the $1 billion settlement, because the agreement requires 95% of the plaintiffs to sign on, otherwise Stryker can walk away from the settlement.
