Risperdal Lawsuits Claim Gynecomastia or Male Breast Growths

Risperdal Drug Maker, Johnson & Johnson Inc. (J&J), is facing legal action involving its once successful antipsychotic drug. The lawsuit claims allege that J&J failed to warn patients about theside effects potentially associated with the medication, and that it illegally marketed Risperdal for off-label, unapproved uses. Risperdal was initially approved by the FDA to treat various psychiatric disorders such as, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder. However, research is now indicating that Risperdal could be increasing the risk of serious medical side effects, including stroke, heart attack, tardive dyskinesia, hyperglycemia, hypersosmolar coma, diabetes, and gynecomastia – which is a condition which causes male’s breasts to grow. Now that the research has been made public, and many victims are coming forward, Risperdal is quickly becoming a national litigation against Johnson & Johnson Inc.

Risperdal Lawsuits Filed Against Johnson & Johnson Inc. and Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. Continue to Pile Up

In 2012, J&J reported that there were over 400 lawsuits filed against the company. However, now that the Risperdal side effects have been made public, MT Services expects this number to reach into the 1000’s by 2014 in both State Courts and in Federal Court in Pennsylvania. Of the 400 or so cases, approximately 130 cases involve claims that Risperdal has caused young men to suffer from gynecomastia or male breast growth.

$2.2 Bil. Risperdal Settlement Announced

In November 2013, The NY Times reported that Johnson & Johnson Inc. has agreed to pay more than $2.2 billion in criminal and civil fines to settle accusations that it improperly promoted the antipsychotic drug Risperdal to older adults, children and people with developmental disabilities to the U.S. Justice Dept.

In September 2012, Johnson & Johnson Inc. settled the first Risperdal lawsuit to go to trial over male breast growth. The plaintiff, Aaron Banks, was a 21-year-old who claimed in his lawsuit that his Risperdal use caused him to suffer gynecomastia side effects, a condition characterized by abnormal breast growth in males. In addition, Banks alleged that he suffered psychological trauma caused by the male breast growth, claims that a recent gynecomastia study has supported. According to the research, even mild breast growth among boys can have serious psychological side effects, possibly impacting the victim’s self-esteem, mental health and social functioning.
