Onglyza and Heart Failure Link>

Onglyza (saxagliptin) was approved in 2009 and was designed to help people with Type 2 diabetes (who do not suffer from diabetic ketoacidosis) by helping controlling high blood sugar. Onglyza effectively controls blood sugar, and unlike other diabetes medications, the drug does not encourage weight gain. The medication was jointly developed and introduced by AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb, and it quickly became a top selling drug.

Despite the positive effects of Onglyza, potential cardiovascular risks have already been found in clinical trials, including heart failure. According to a study published in October of 2013 by the New England Journal of Medicine, Onglyza has been linked to a 27% increased risk of hospitalization for heart failure. Additionally, some doctors are concerned over reports of the possibility of increased risk of pancreatitis and cancer (pancreatic and thyroid cancer).

FDA Warning

In February of 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a new Safety Alert stating they requested raw data from the SAVOR-TIMI 53 clinical trial, a study that linked Onglyza and heart failure. The results of the SAVOR trial were considered preliminary, and the FDA is currently investigating the evidence linking the type-2 diabetes drug Onglyza (saxagliptin) and heart failure as part of a larger study of new diabetes drugs and heart risks associated with them.
